Ramblin' man by Hank Williams - covered by 'no horse no rider' and 'hey-o-hansen and ava carrère':![]() |
format: 10inch vinyl label: MKT (medien kunst tirol) - http://www.mkt.at/ release: MKT07 artists: hey-o-hansen, no horse no rider |
Hiram 'Hank' King Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953) was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter who has also become an icon of country music and Rock 'n' Roll, and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
His songs have been covered in a range of pop, gospel, and rock styles by Frankie Lane, Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell, The Melvins,The Residents, Tom Waits, Slint and many many more - and now by 'no horse no rider' and 'hey-o-hansen and ava carrère'.
While side A by 'no horse no rider' is a brave traditional country style tribute to Hank Williams, side B by 'hey-o-hansen and ava carrère' is a ventured re-interpretation of the song in a very unique style. To our knowledge this is the first version of ramblin' man with a femal vocalist and it is definitely the first reggae/dancehall style version.

In 2006 hey-o-hansen released a series of 12inch singles, documenting their musical journey starting from the soundtracks to a yet unwriten Emir Kusturica film stepping into their unique style of Berlin-Afro-Alpin-Dubstep-Killersound completely obliterating any sound system with some maximum badness. This is the cd compilation of the vinyl collectors series.
They were supported by the co-musicians
Wolfang Amadé Kapellari, Gerhard Erler, Samuli Kosminen and Eiríkur Orri from icelands múm and
Olaf Rupp (audiosemantics, emanem, meta records, fmp, kitty-yo, and others).
Voices by Mariano Rajoy (leader of the opposition and of the conservative Popular Party in Spain), Mustapha Nabli (regional chief economist and director of social and economic development in the World Bank's Middle East and North Africa region) and Dirk von Lowtzow (Tocotronic, Phantom/Ghost).
AND it never would have happened without the excellent league of berlin based remixers
thaddeus herrmann (city centre offices, herrmann&kleine, de:bug), harzkrafthof (lovelite), karl marx stadt (mental int., Kool.pop, lux nigra and others), dj maxximus (Tresor, Ambush, Schematic, Warp, Digital Hardcore, Mental Groove and others), multipara (lux nigra).
All you dubstep fans out there, listen up to an incredible 75 minutes mixture of so many different styles, mixed like a well thought out pot of austrian soup with dumplings. A truly intriguing and rewarding piece of dancefloor science. Just peerless material, Pull up operator!
"A Journey Into Berlin's Afro-Alpin-Dubstep-Killersound" lautet der Untertitel dieses Albums von hey o hansen, das die Maxis des letzten Jahres kompiliert, und besser könnte der Claim auch nicht sein. Breite, dichte Tracks vereinen die Strömungen, die uns alle haben tanzen lassen im letzten Jahr. Wir verweisen auf die Besprechungen der einzelnen Maxis und freuen uns, dass man das nun auch in einem Rutsch perfekt durchhören kann. Killer eben. (debug)
''It all started back in the mists of time (well 2005 actually) when Hey-O-Hansen initiated what would become a six-part singles collection that sought to fully explore their numerous influences - pressing onto vinyl something which could happily skip from hard-boiled techno one minute, through to Alpine folk the next, all without perspiration. With the likes of Karl Marx Stadt, Thaddeus Herrmann, DJ Maxximus, Mum's Eirikur Orri and Samuli Kosminen and Olaf Rupp and Dirk von Lowtzow all adding their weight to proceedings, it soon becomes clear that there was very little chance 'the06singles' would be anything other than essential. Which it is. A hybrid of styles and sounds, Hey-O-Hansen are the type of collective for whom the word 'eclectic' could have been minted - as they plunder the annals for dubstep, techno, reggae, ambient, folk and psych, then peel off the best bits before reassembling it as a fully functioning and utterly unique entity. Bringing together all six singles, this handy CD distillation will come as a boon both to those who missed out first time round or have seen their vinyl develop RTS through time under the stylus. Kicking proceedings into touch, opening track 'Moon' is a gleeful refraction of genre-bustin' excess that was originally conceived as the soundtrack to an as yet unwritten Emir Kusturica film. Jacked to the peak of fitness, 'Moon' is also included in its Thaddi clothed mix - wherein some minimal Chicago flavours are delivered via the Alps for warped nourishment. Next up is 'Gogogo', a fizzing plate of dub, tech, horns and shimmering grooves (bundled here with a startling mix from Berlin protégé 'Harzkrafthof), before 'Fire' burns down the house with a knob-on Karl Marx Stadt take that explores similar territory to Andy Stott's 'Choke'. Elsewhere, 'Fly Home' is 140bpm of sheer joy, 'Babylon System' deploys sub-bass galore, whilst 'Abraxas' marks the end through some wonk-step madness that really shouldn't work as well as it does... Hey you guys!''

''Completing the Hey-O-Hansen six pack, this last installment sees Múm's Eiríkur Orri pitching in on space trumpet and Dirk von Lowtzow (Tocotronic / Phantom/Ghost) with vocals - creating something that sounds not unlike dubstep as viewed through a fairground hall of mirrors... Apparently crafted as an answer to Kode 9's '9 Samurai' (take that with a pinch of salt mind...), 'Abraxas' is a cerebral chunk of wonky-step that features lyrics from Carl Gustav Jungs' 1916 work 'Septem Sermones ad Mortuos' atop rumbling subs and bad-boy beats of the clinical kind. If that all sounds a bit intimidating, don't fear - because amongst all this bwopping beats is the same attention to detail and emotional warmth that has made their name, with 'Abraxas' representing the kind of dubstep you could take home to meet your mum. Busy enough to warrant full resolution, the composition never seems cluttered - as the horns weave their magic around Lowtzow's intoned vocals. Joined on the back by 'Abraxas Version' (wherein it's made sparser and even more chunky), this is a fitting end to a much lauded series. Hey, ho!''

side a: HEY-O-HANSEN - BABYLON SYSTEM - length: 10:36 - vocals, african and electronic beats, lolo subbass, afro alpine dubstep.
side b: MULTIPARA - BABYLON SYSTEM remix - length: 5:46 - dub techno
With this 12inch hey-o-hansen are moving beyond dubstep style. Starting with a funeral brass band from ghana followed by super lo basslines and percussion explosions. ''fire blast babylon system'' - there is nothing more to say.
multipara is probably best known as the man behind the label lux nigra, which put out
about two dozen releases of all sorts of post-techno electronic music since 1998. during
the past ten years, he's also been involved in a few other musical activities - mostly as a
dj, as a host of various regular nights in his hometown berlin, and as a writer (since 2003
regularly for debug magazine). occasionally, he produces music, preferably remixes, and
plays live. for hey-o-hansen, he gave their original track an extra rave-hop kick of his own
flavour, complete with bonus west-african cross-beat interlude.
www.luxnigra.de
''The fifth part in Hey-O-Hansen's '2006 Singles Collection', 'Babylon System' continues to carve the Berlin signature across the peppered Alpine variations that so characterise Hey Rec's sound. With a lead track that features waves of vocals, African rhythms, electronic beats, and sub-bass galore, 'Babylon System' pretty much assembles itself - fusing a Ghanaian funeral brass band to dubstep schematics in a style which will have you stuck in the groove well past the run-out. On the back is a remix from the man Multipara - best known for his output on Lux Nigra and journalistic skills - wherein rave-hop makes its presence felt through some carbonated styles which cross cut the West African base with a topping of potent chrome beats. Eclectic, loud and proud, 'Babylon System' is further reason to make space in your collection for an 'Alpine Dubstep' section...''

side b: DJ MAXXIMUS - FLY HOME RMX - length: 8:29 - dubstep
With this 12inch hey-o-hansen are moving fastly towards the dubstep style. The track has the atmosphere of a perfect idyll on a tyrolean alp and the frightening sound of a capella dance steps recorded at the last dance of berlin 'komische oper' (opera ballet) dancers before the ballet was closed. A heartbreaking acoustic guitar solo improvised by Olaf Rupp (www.audiosemantics.de, releases on emanem, meta records, musica genara, grob, happy zloty, fmp, sieben 7.3, kitty-yo and others) Voice samples by Mariano Rajoy (leader of the opposition and of the conservative Popular Party in Spain) and Mustapha Nabli (regional chief economist and director of social and economic development in the World Bank's Middle East and North Africa region) point at what is most important to say when you are a afro-alpine dub-band in Europe while ten thousands of Africans are on their way: ''It is almost impossible to imigrate into the European Community from African Countries (Rajoy). The biggest pressure is now (Nabli).''
Dj Maxximus aka DIN-ST has been producing bass music for 10 years, Influenced by early Hardcore and Drumnbass in 91, remixing NWA for Kid606, producing with Peaches and dropping the first grimy hip hop album on Digital Hardcore before 2000. He is also part of Fever (with Paul P.M./Puppetmastaz), Robotnics Crossing (german-japanese punk band from 96), Firewire (with Carl from Atari Teenage Riot) & Eradicator (hardcore project with Patric Catani, now Candi Hank/Puppetmastaz) and had releases with label like Tresor, Ambush and Schematic, Infected by Uk-garage sound in 2000, Dj Maxximus started with his mate Something J to produce their own variation of 2-step /garage and ended up getting a deal on Warp records in 2001 with Mercedes Bentley vs Versace Armani. He stayed for a year in Londons Hackney area and created music with ultra-low twisted basslines during the rise of what would become later Grime. Back in Berlin with this new sound, he started playing with artists like Dizzee Rascal, TTC, Mark One, D Double E, Team Shadetek, The Bug and Soom-T and released a first e.p. Trust me for Mental Groove. Playing Live Shows and DJ-sets in Europe, Israel, Japan & America, DJ Maxximus is now ready to Bass the World!!!

''One of the most consistently interesting Berlin labels operating from the D+M/Hardwax axis, heyrec come correct this week with a heavyweight slice of steppers techno. Flying in at a rockin' 140bpm with nifty half-step tendencies, the track develops into layers of lush latin guitars and swirling synth pads with joyful rasta cries for some goodtime party biznizz. Longtime dubcore fiend and proprietor of FWD>>'s Berlin franchise DJ Maxximus does a grand remix job on the flip with some overt dubsteppin references but still sticking with the propulsive techno-step patterns, switching between 4/4 and half-step but never requiring the patience needed with yer typical standard dubstep riddims. A truly intriguing and rewarding piece of dancefloor science, get your snaffle on.''

''The alpine dub crew comes again in a late summer style and fashion. Following up 'Moon' and 'Gogogo', two chart-toppers in these here parts, comes this excellent third volume in the Hey singles series. It's a timely and refreshing blend, as the Hey boys join forces with Karl Marx Stadt - Hey rocking the top-side with some adulterated bashment, Karl Marx Stadt chopping up the place with a dubstep beamer, straight in your face. Featuring band fellow sir lord gordon odametey tackling the fiery subject matter ina fashion somewhere close to Super Cat, an unnamed ice-maiden on chorus duties and a rhythm seemingly updated from Cutty Ranks late eighties - early nineties raggamuffin take on the 'lambada', you've a new and sweetly twisted chapter in the remarkable Hey discography. Only....flip the twelve and all you dubstep fans out there, listen up to the 'extinguisher' mix - from apparent calm, Karl Marx Stadt musters forth a well of deep bass, if you slept on andy stott's awesome 'choke' ten inch plate and regretted it, then this could go some distance as a fitting recompense. Berlin flipping the alpine dub in yet another direction, and then halfway through the tune, completely obliterating any sound system with some maximum badness. Pull up operator!''

|
a 12inch single with an vocal track by hey-o-hansen and a remix by harzkrafthof.
''The new Hey-o-Hansen record shows sounds starting to toughen up for our alpine berliner heroes, following a rave reception accorded to their last single "Moon". It features an incredible mixture of so many different styles, mixing those styles like a well thought out pot of austrian soup with dumplings. GOGOGO should freshen even the most jaded pair of ears, there is definitely something special about the melody running throughout. Touted as afro alpine dub techno with vocals, alp horns, african percussion and a steady beat, you may well be surprised by the gleaming, shimmering, mountain railway groove, ideal soundtrack material for those summer trips into the mountains. the B side sees Harzkrafthof metalically kick it off with spacious berlin sounds - something about this music has a magical quality you just don't commonly find elsewhere. Excellent stuff, no doubt.''

hey-o-hansen start new single series with heyrec 10 'moon'
|
a 12inch single with an instrumental track by hey-o-hansen and a remix by thaddeus herrmann.
''Hey and Hansen have always been a priceless Berlin oddity. The project has its tentacles clawed into some of the cities best known underground establishments with long-term connections and afiliations alongside numerous labels, the Hard Wax axis, Iceland's ecclectic Mum collective and yet their music has resolutely singled itself out from the crowd. For the last 8 years Hey & Hansen have delicately developed their love of alpine folk, accordions and dub traditions into a hybrid of gypsy accoustics and effervescent electronic tinkerings. The results have never been anything less than captivating, with even hardened techno casualties unable to resist its originality and endless charm. This awesome release unearths new track 'Moon' - another refracting gem of multi-generic deviations that sound like the soundtrack to an as yet unwriten Emir Kusturica film - just peerless material.
The flipside, however, is what will totally wreck you Thaddi evolving the track into an unlikely blend of minimal jacking Chicago acid and Alpine folk, sort of like Mr Fingers with accordions!! Honestly, you'll have never heard anything quite like this and we implore you all to buy it immediately. Killer!!!''
